state and public schools
Explanation:
You are right that the public schools (Eton, Harrow, Gordonston etc.) are private, paying, hard to get into (social and academic/philosophical requirements) schools. The rest are state schools, see ref.

agree  Hermeneutica: Nonono, private schools in England are what would be "special education" schools elsewhere, i.e. for kids with difficulties or ones that are simply not quite bright enough to make it to a proper public school (e.g. Eton, etc) but the parents do have money

  -> Thank you for this explanation Dee.

disagree  LizF: That's not true, private schools in England are not for children with special educational needs - they are for children whose parents wish to and are rich enough to pay for their education. Public schools are 200-300 year old elite private schools.

public and private schools

Explanation:
Sounds right to me. "Public", in this sense, means that they are state-owned, governed or financed by public authorities. You mean public is in the sense that everyone should have access. Two different meanings that can coexist independently.

neutral  Sheila Hardie: I would use private school as a synonym for public school (i.e. non-state school) in the UK (I was educated at a UK state school):)

disagree  LizF: Agree with SJH: the English education system falls into 2 sectors: state and private, with public schools being elite private schools. I'm English!

disagree  John Kinory (X): As a teacher in Britain for many years, I assure you this answer is incorrect. There are non-'public' private schools. the answer is maintained and non-maintained schools.

state and private schools

Explanation:
The English education system can be split into 2 sectors: state (i.e. funded by government) and private (i.e. fee-paying). Public schools are elite private schools, originally set up to educate the sons of the aristocracy e.g Eton, Harrow, Rugby, etc.

Explanation:
I just wanted to comment that I completely agree with LizF on this issue. The use of the words public and private may be a bit confusing, but her explanation is absolutely correct.

Ref: I was educated at a state school in Scotland and taught at a state school in England.
