See below Explanation: Oxford-Duden describes a "Studienrat" as an established or tenured teacher at the secondary level, noting that the title was an honorary one conferred on teachers in the former GDR. This implies to me that the title is given after several years of experience, so it wouldn't make sense that this would be a degree or the name of a final examination in a course of study. Maybe somebody else has some insight. |

teacher Explanation: This is just a fancy term for Lehrer (teacher). Passing an Abschlusspruefung in this would thus give you a teaching degree. |

Teacher at a secondary school Explanation: Actually, it is neither- it is a professional title of a public servant, namely of a teacher at a secondary school who has served in his/her profession for several years after the second state examination. There are various steps involved before you can call yourself a Studienrat- Studienreferendar, -assessor. After you have served as a Studienrat for some time, you might be promoted to Studiendirektor. HTH ! Muret Sanders |

I think Johanna has it about right Explanation: A Studienrat is more than a "simple teacher" (I guess I'm allowed to say that since I am a simple teacher myself) 1) You become a Studienrat after several years of teaching practice at a secondary school in Germany, after all the stages Johanne describes. 2) If it really is an Abschlußprüfung/final exam title, then the only possibility is that the people who take this have a teaching "permit" for a certain type of school, i.e. the German Gymnasium. This is the only school type where every teacher almost automatically is a Studienrat - in all other school types you have to earn this degree by teaching for a longer time. To get this, the normal teacher training at a German university is necessary, plus a couple of extra subjects and seminars which would then explain the "higher" title of Studienrat for people who just finished their studies. I hope you're familiar with the German system of Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium - because it's really difficult to sum it up in a few words. HTH Sibyl me and myself |

senior teacher (at a secondary school) Explanation: I think Johanna has given a very good answer - although I do think it should be "senior teacher", since you have to go through several stages to become a Studienrat. |
