German term or phrase: Rückkanal
Ausbau von 4.000 Wohneinheiten Berlin Mitte auf 862 Mhz, mit Rückkanal.
This is one of the objectives for 2000 of a communications company which is contained in a document about marketing strategies and expansion of the network.
Julie Neill
backward channel
Explanation:
See the explanation from Brinkmann, Datentechnik, below:

Rückkanal m (Tr) / backward channel
Rückkanal m (Kanal für die Datenübertragung vom Btx-Teilnehmer zur Btx-Zentrale) (Vtx) / backward channel
breitbandiger Rückkanal (Net, Tr) / backward broadband channel

Because backward channel sounded strange to my ear, I did a quick Google search on "backward channel" and found the following:
In data transmission, a secondary channel in which the direction of transmission is constrained to be opposite to that of the primary, i.e. , the forward (user-information) channel. Note: The direction of transmission in the backward channel is restricted by the control interchange circuit that controls the direction of transmission in the primary channel. 2. In a data circuit, the channel that passes data in a direction opposite to that of its associated forward channel. (188) Note 1: The backward channel is usually used for transmission of supervisory, acknowledgement, or error-control signals. The direction of flow of these signals is opposite to that in which user information is being transferred. Note 2: The backward-channel bandwidth is usually less than that of the primary channel, i.e., the forward (user information) channel.

seems to be "transponder"

Explanation:
I only know transponders from aviation.
But I found several sites where Rueckkanal was interchanged with transponder:

Return channel

Explanation:
This exists as an entry in a polytechnical dictionary, but unfortunately it does not give the equivalent German term.
