Hamamelis, witch hazel and more Explanation: Dear colleagues, dear Bochert: joining in the desperate scramble for priceless KudoZ points, here my attempt to out-dictionary everyone else: Zaubernuss is indeed Hamamelis or witch-hazel. However, there is more to it than Langenscheidt wishes to tell us: 5-6 species: H. x intermedia, a hybrid of japoniaca and mollis H.japonica - Japanese Witch Hazel H.mollis - Chinese Witch Hazel H.vernalis - native to North America H.virginiana - Virginian Witch Hazel, native to North America All this is in Hyam/Pankhurst: Plants and their Names, Oxford Univ. Press, 1995 It follows from FAO Terminology Bulletin 25/1 (Plants and Plant Products) and from Uphof's Dictionary of Economic Plants (Verlag von J. Cramer, 1968, still available in 1997) that the species commonly used is H.virginiana, the specific products being: Hamamelis Cortex (Witchhazel Bark) Hamamelic Water (Extract of Witchhazel) Regards, Christopher Hay |

Hamamelis Hamamelidaceae/ Witch Hazel Explanation: This is the answer provided in Elsevier's Dictionary of Plant Names. More specific information is provided depending on the adjective preceeding "Zaubernuss", for example: Virginische Zaubernuss = Virginian / Common Witch Hazel etc. good luck! |
