American and Asiatic trees and shrubs of the witch hazel family; esp., a tall shrub (Hamamelis virginiana) of E N. America, having yellow, wavy-petaled flowers in late autumn and woody fruit" . . . Webster's New World Dictionary, 2nd College Edition. The late autumn would correspond to having blooms in December. |
