Angenommen wird hier der theoretisch einfachste Fall einer planparallelen Schicht mit der Brechzahl n und der geometrischen Dicke d. Ausgehend von einer Punktlichtquelle P0 wird ein Lichtstrahl S0 im Punkt A teilweise reflektiert (Strahl S1 unter Winkel a und zum anderen Teil in die Schicht hinein gebrochen (unter Winkel a).
