Pehnt weist darauf hin, daß zur gleichen Zeit das Publikum sich in den stürzenden Betongiganten der Katastro-phenfilme schadlos hielt für die zementierte Unsterblichkeit der realen Städte

agree  philgoddard: I don't think this is totally right ("zur gleichen Zeit" refers to the previous sentence, and "sich schadlos halten" doesn't mean "gloat over"), but this is roughly the right idea. You left out "they" before "were".

  -> Hi Phil , at the same time refers, as far as I understand it, to the parallel emotions: gloating over disaster and smugly convinced of their own safety. "Sich schadlos halten" is more "smugly convinced". You're right about the "they", forgot it.
