major / serious pollution Explanation: Just did a quick Google check ... with the following results heavy pollution 2710 hits severe pollution 2820 hits major pollution 4080 hits serious pollution 5950 hits So it would appear that they are all viable alternatives ... you could go for whichever you prefer and it would be understood.
