German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Patents / MIDI-Instrument
German term or phrase: Tastgriff
gestengesteuertes MIDI-Instrument mit integriertem Microcontroller und entsprechenden Baugruppen zur Erzeugung von Notwerten sowie zur Steuerung weiterer Klangparameter.
Die Steuerung der Töne geschieht durch Tastgriff auf einem länglichen Sensorfeld. Die Lautstärke wird unter Verwendung eines Entfernungssensors geregelt. Je höher das MIDI-Instrument gehalten wird, je lauter der Ton.

probe handle?

English translation:touch
Explanation:
Bin mir nicht sicher, ob "Griff" hier stimmt; "Sensorfeld" paßt eigentlich nicht zur festen Art eines Griffs. Wenn tatsächlich die Tonsteuerung durch Berührung (ohne zugreifen) erfolgt, wäre "touch" m.E. hier ausreichend.

grasp/grasping

Explanation:
It sounds like the device has an extended sensor area that the user can hold in a sliding grasp and vary the pitch by sliding their hand along the sensor area (the 'full-hand' version of a touchpad).

As usual with patents, you're working blindfolded if you don't have the drawings.

agree  Ken Cox: could be -- as noted in my answer, the drawings (or other additional context) would be useful and may be necessary to pin down the exact meaning

Reference information:
Since the text seems to deal with a gesture-controlled (musical) instrument, I assume that "Tastgriff" here means something like "by hitting several/a pattern of keys on ....", like playing a chord on a piano, IMO it has nothing to do with a grip or handle or button

seems to be something like Nintendo's Wii for playing/recording music controlled by gestures
