I recall running across this word a few years back and finding a suitable translation for it at the time... but now I can't remember what I settled on (or where I found the info)! Nothing seems to come up in the glossaries here.
The full sentence is: Auch wurde in der nachfolgenden Analyse auf eine kunstsame Differenzierung verzichtet, die lediglich die Übersichtigkeit in Frage stellt.

Thanks so much to all for the input. I ended up going with "prior art" instead of "state of the art" but that's just due to my attorneys' preference for this term. [To Jutta: I usually have to deal with words that just simply don't really exist every single day! :-) ]

agree  Jutta Scherer: Ja, hätte ich auch so vermutet (möglich auch: "state-of-the-art" als Adjektiv). Wobei ich nach wie vor meine, dass es dieses Wort nicht gibt! :-)
