German to English translations [PRO]
Social Sciences - Philosophy / theory
German term or phrase: Erkenntnisinteresse
Not much context, except that sociological theories and their "Erkenntnisinteresse" are concerned. So what is NOT intended here is something like "thirst for/interest in knowledge".

Any ideas? Many thanks!

Clarification request(s) and response
Johanna Timm, PhD: 4:16pm Jun 15, 2007: Could you please provide at least the entire German sentence in which the term occurs? A paragraph would be even better 8-) Thanks.
Textworks Translations: 9:35pm Jun 15, 2007: I wish I could, but it's merely a table of contents I'm looking at, and one of the headlines reads "Theorie, Erkenntnisinteresse und Theorievielfalt"...

aim of the inquiry
Explanation:
Difficult to judge without further context, but "Erkenntnisinteresse" is often just a scientific synonym for "Zielsetzung".

.... sociological theories and the aims of their proponents ...
.... sociological theories and the aims of the inquiries that led to them ...

Even the minimal context is better than none. So, for
"Theorie, Erkenntnisinteresse und Theorievielfalt"..
as a title, how about:

Theories, their premises and their diversity.
Theories, Premises and Theoretical Diversity
Theories, Epistemology and Theoretical Diversity

neutral Craig Meulen: not sure about "cognitive interest" but "scientific interest" - why not, and the Leo discussions are useful.

agree Kieran McCann: keep it simple, in the absence of the other headings in the table of contents which might give us the clue we need to come up with an authoritative translation
