Kunst als Forschung | | German term or phrase: Setzung | Der Text ist aus einem Kunstkatalog über eine Ausstellung zum Thema künstlerische Forschung. Mich interessiert eine hier sowohl für Naturwissenschaft als auch Kunst passende Übersetzung des Begriffs "Setzung". Originalton:
--In der wissenschaftlichen Forschung scheinen mir viele wissenschaftlich Forschende vergessen zu haben, dass sie erstens auch eine Medialität bespielen und dass sie zweitens immer eine Setzung vornehmen, vornehmen müssen. Das Spannende an der künstlerischen Forschung ist für mich nun, dass wir hier explizit mit diesen Setzungen operieren. ...
--Auch der Philosoph Marcus Steinweg spricht von Kunst als einer *Setzung*. „Weder in der Philosophie noch in der Kunst“, schreibt er in seinem Buch „Behauptungsphilosophie“ (2006), „geht es um Beweis oder Meinung. Es geht um eine Setzung, um Behauptung. Die Behauptung unterscheidet vom Beweis und der Meinung, dass sie ohne Gewissheit auskommen muss. … Sie überschreitet die Modalitäten herkömmlichen Denkens, wie Reflexion, Begründung, Kritik und Argument.“

I’m reminded of Walter Benjamin’s theory of aesthetics in which he makes a distinction between reflection and positing (cf. ‘Concept of Criticism in German Romanticism’). For Benjamin, art represents the possibility of infinite reflection, but then his primary concern is with the impact of the work of art upon its observer/critic. Steinweg’s art as science seems to look at art from the point of view of the artist, who, by positing, imposes a limit on the infinite through representation [form]. Any production of knowledge has to start with a hypothesis. Benjamin of course wanted art to subvert the very idea of logos, whereas Steinweg sounds like he wants to utilise art's potential to create knowledge.
