sentient

Explanation:
In literature, e.g. about vegetarianism, the word sentient is often used to describe living things as being conscious beings. Therefore, being sentient, includes being able to suffer. I believe it fits into your text better than the literal translation, such as sufferable, or so.
Well, that's my opinion
All the best, RF

agonistic beings

Explanation:
That is, beings that because they are able to feel and work out pain are also capable of being aggressive or defensive in their social interactions, for instance, by fighting, fleeing, or submitting. That would cover a pretty large ground as far as living beings are concerned.
