Als wir zu Hause ankamen, Oma und Opa hatten mal wieder Haus und Kinder "eingehuetet," wie meine Mutter immer zu sagen pflegte, hatten meine Brueder fuer mich ein grosses Transparent ueber der Eingangstuer angebracht...

obviously a synonym for "watched over," but I'm wondering first of all why it's in quotation marks in the original; and if perhaps its regional and/or an idiom.

I think the English term would be housesitting for the one and babysitting for the other. In combination, however, I think you would just say grandma and grandpa had been minding the house and children again" or some such.
