Explanation:
I tried to come up with an idiom that might fit you context. It depends however a little on what is meant by "Umständen" or exactly how the young man and the middle age man differ. You know all this of course, which is why I would suggest taking a look at this page of idioms with "take".

My thoughts were framed by Treplev and Trigorin in"The Seagull" - the young man trying to buck tradition in the name of the new and innovative.

Other possibilities seemed potentially to be:

"accept/take something as gospel"
"take something at face value"
"take something in stride"
"take kindly to something"
