German term or phrase: Selbstbilder
I am translating an academic paper on Arthur Miller, the American playwright. I've only met Selbstbilder as self-portraits before but something about the context makes me wonder whether it can mean something like "selfmade man"? All help appreciated, many thanks. The context is "Zentrales Anliegen seiner Werke ist die Darstellung von Selbstbildern in ihrem Verhaeltnis zu den persoenlichen Interessen einzelner Menschen."

now I'm not sure, can it be "themselves" or does it have to be:
how a person sees him or herself
