Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature
German term or phrase: Kultursprache
This is from an afterword on Kafka's "A Country Doctor" which is to be published after the stories. It comes from the section on the reception of his works.

"Heute sind seine Bücher in alle **Kultursprachen** übersetzt und man staunt oft, wie weit die Wirkung des Autors tatsächlich reicht."

LEO gives "civilised language" and I've also found "language of a civilised people" which sounds dreadfully imperialist and un-PC! Are there any alternatives out there?

major language
Explanation:
I think I'd stick with something like "has been translated into every/all major language/s". This is basically what they're getting at, IMO.

agree  Ken Cox: yep -- the (inherently elitarian) concept of Kultursprache is probably outdated nowadays (presumably the expression survives as a cliché)

culturally important language

Explanation:
"There are just five languages that have had an over-whelming significance as carriers of culture. They are classical Chinese, Sanskrit, Arabic, Greek, and Latin. In comparison with these even such culturally important languages as Hebrew and French sink into a secondary position"

neutral  Ken Cox: do you seriously think Kafka has been translated into Latin? Not to mention that the author's assertion is debatable...

Explanation:
For most contexts though 'major', as suggested above, is probably adequate here.

This reminds me of a lively debate in 2005 about the term 'Kulturraum':
