Again, I'm struggling to express this idea in English:

"Fortan musste er sich in regelmäßigen Abständen von den Seelen anderer ernähren, die er durch seinen tödlichen Gesang an sich band und sich dann **im Zustand der Entrückung von allem weltlichen** endgültig einverleibte. Die Todsänger werden auch Seelenfresser genannt. "

Granted, I'm being a bit free with the translation here because I'm adding something that isn't there. However, I believe that "ties/links/bindings" (whichever you prefer, or perhaps a different synonym thereof) makes perfect sense when considering the context that I've gathered from this question and your previous one. Otherwise, maybe this will get the ball rolling.

(BTW and just in case: entrücken is a synonym of entziehen, wegnehmen, etc.)

I'd venture to say that this is a readable alternative that largely retains the meaning of the German

ei}n|ver|lei|ben <sw. V.; verleibt ein/(auch:) einverleibt, verleibte ein/(auch:) einverleibte; hat> [zu Leib]:

2. <e. + sich> (scherzh.) [eine größere Menge von etw.] essen, (seltener:) trinken: ich habe mir den übrig gebliebenen Kuchen einverleibt; Ü sich neue Erkenntnisse e. (geistig aneignen).

ent|rü|cken <sw. V.; hat> [mhd. entrücken, zu rücken] (geh.):

auf wunderbare Weise in eine andere Welt, in einen anderen Zustand versetzen: <häufig im 2. Part.:> [im Traum] selig entrückt sein; entrückt auf etw. blicken.

I feel you must be able to leave out the material connotations of "weltlich" and the descriptive "a state of", but I'm obviously not sure.
