Die schwer leserliche Handschrift des Autors und die Materialfülle forderten den Bearbeitern Scharfsinn und Geduld ab.

I'm not too sure, hiow about "the immense amount of material"? Also, might Scharfsinn have been used slightly incorrrectly here, perhaps to mean concentration or perception rather than any of the normal meanings/translations?

Yes, your 'immense amount of material' is fine - perhaps a bit too much?! How about perspicacity for Scharfsinn? Attention to detail?

Asker: But if it says that "Die Handschrift erfordert mitunter Scharfsinn" it would probably be better to steer away from a literal translation and say that "the handwriting could be very demanding to decipher", would it not?
