| | stem, ascender | Explanation: The ascenders in the Kufic script samples I found featured a distinct serif with the slant facing left, which seems to be what is being described in the source text.

"Stem – A major vertical or diagonal stroke in the letterform"
"Ascender – A stroke on a lowercase letter that rises above the meanline"
(In the case of Arabic script, I cannot say whether the ascenders are only found in its lowercase letters, but the typographic feature would be the same.)
I also found some cases where "Haste" was used to refer to a "stroke" (more general), rather than a stem (specific strokes). See, for instance, here:
