literary outsider

Explanation:
Another suggestion which might work, depending on context. Admittedly, I don't know anything about the writer in question, or his work.

‘Haruki Murakami calls himself a literary outsider. "I don't deal with the Japanese literary circle or society at all. I live totally separate from them and still rebel against that world."’

Literary outsider triumphs
ABOUT a decade ago, when talking to a roomful of creative-writing students at the University of Houston, Dagoberto Gilb related his experience as a literary outsider, as someone outside the writerly and academic loop. For 16 years Gilb had been a card-carrying union carpenter. While the privileged among the class -- and that was most of them -- had been networking, schmoozing, spending summers in Venice, Gilb had been swinging a hammer by day and writing by night.’

‘Conrad, the literary outsider ignored by his adopted country
One of the most influential and widely read writers of the Victorian age, Joseph Conrad inspired authors from William Golding to Graham Greene and tackled topics such as immigration, terrorism and colonialism with an unerring prescience that foretold the dilemmas of the present.
Yet today, the 150th anniversary of the birth of Joseph Konrad Korzeniowski will pass largely unnoticed outside the tightly knit academic community which keeps the writer's spirit alive.’

Literary outsider dies after prolific life
ANTHONY BURGESS has died in a London hospital after a long illness, it was announced yesterday, writes Kevin Jackson.’

‘Higgins, Rita An
Gutsy, anarchic poet and dramatist who has been a literary outsider writing from inside Irish society.’

literarisch alleinganger
literary lone wolf

Explanation:
Each of the suggestions so far given has its merits but I'm not happy with any of them, and I confess my own suggestion only merits medium on the confidence scale. Why I prefer it to the others (in their order of preference):
maverick suggests a certain uncontrolled unpredictability, loner is not necessarily a matter of choice, and outsider, usually, even less so. The lone wolf concept suggests choice, control and purpose, which I suspect is what earned the author the description. I'm also a sucker for alliteration.

A bit more neutral in tone (like hoare-spitall's literary lone wolf).
