Another thing to consider: as unfair as it may be, the word "fatherland" has NS-Zeit connotations to many English speakers. Search the word "fatherland" in the English-language Google and see what comes up on the first page. If this translation is for a general audience and you want to avoid any confusion, I'd stick with "homeland" or "home country."
