German to English translations [PRO]
Art/Literary - Poetry & Literature / an epithet for Goethe
German term or phrase: Auf der Suche
I'm still translating the headings for some information boards referring to Goethe. Now we are onto his life which is divided up into parts such as "Am Beginn", "Der Jurist", "Neue Wege", "Sturm und Drang" "Auf der Suche" and "Ausblick" (haven't thought up anything for this one, either).
"Auf der Suche" seems to be about G. trying to find his place in life and about falling in love. The German subtitle (which does not get translated) is the poem "Neue Liebe, neues Leben". But even if I don't try to get all these connotations, the usual words for "Suche" or "suchen" don't seem very helpful. Perhaps one of you will have a brainwave?

English translation:Goethe's quest
Explanation:
The word 'quest' sprang immediately to my mind - either 'Goethe's quest', 'his quest' or simply 'the quest', depending on what follows.

Goethe's quest to find his place in life, new love etc. Hope this helps ;-)

I am a bit embarrassed about choosing this entry partly because I think you tied with franglish and secondly because all the votes have gone in a different direction. However this is definitely the version that I prefer. I offered my client some of the other suggestions, so it will be interesting to see which she chose - I'll let you all know!

neutral  writeaway: from the context, I'd say a 'quest' is too definite a term. a quest for what?

-> Thank you writeaway. I believe that 'quest' provides as much information about what Goethe is looking for as 'Auf der Suche'

Explanation:
One option, perhaps.

As regards "Ausblick", I wonder whether it could be "stretched" as far as "Awakening"?

Just a few suggestions - will depend on the tenor and content.

Ausblick could be 'Looking to the Future', for instance.

Thought you might like this, and the picture featured in the link:

The most well known product of these years, in terms of Goethe's oeuvre, is the poem "Harz Journey in Winter," which begins with a poetic invocation: may his song rise as effortlessly as a hawk, its pinions resting lightly on morning clouds, on the lookout for prey: "Dem Geier gleich/ Der auf schweren Morgenwolken/ Mit sanftem Fittich ruhend/ Nach Beute schaut,/ Schwebe mein Lied."
