mind what there is in the way of an "official" translation. There are two subtleties; one is "soll"; something like "supposedly", "presumably", in other word what others think would put us in awe. The other is the changed connotation, from "Charakteristisches", some idiosyncratic quality, to "Charakter", something akin to "personality", which you have or don't, adequately or less so. And then, in the following sentence Goethe, partly, retreats to the former connotation.
No I am sorry I haven't. It is just one quote a client intends to use on their website. No other context. Not being from this side of the world I have not read Goethe. Thank you Karin for the link.
