I think I would go with blockhead/blockheaded or something along those lines, as it combines the concepts of physical heft and mental sluggishness.
Thanks, Sarah. In the end, I went with "bloated" (which, for me, carries the sense of overweight, probably from excessive drinking, and also some sense of not being especially bright) but you certainly set me thinking in the right direction. 4 KudoZ points were awarded for this answer

Ramey, thanks for your help. Sorry, absolutely no more useful context to give. The story is about the people who come knocking at the castle gate, not the "schwerlötige" guard, who's only mentioned in that one sentence.
