Your idea sounds right to me; given the previous reference to chestnuts, they probably played an improvised game of boule using chestnuts instead of real balls.

Is the poem a translation or written by a non-German? The word order seems a bit unnatural, and in particular \'Aber Gestern Wir spielten...\' is a very strange construction, and there doesn\'t seem to be any particular reason to use it for meter, syntax or whatever. |
