German to English translations [PRO]
Tech/Engineering - Printing & Publishing / Software for processing print jobs
German term or phrase: Merkzettel
I am currently translating an operating manual for software that is used when processing print jobs. It allows the customer to communicate electronically with the printing company. The sentence below appears in the section where personal preferences can be set and appears under the heading "Merkzettel." Can anyone please suggest a good translation for the word "Merkzettel."

Bei einer großen Anzahl an Daten und dem gleichzeitigen Bedarf, auf einige davon immer wieder zuzugreifen, empfiehlt es sich, einen Merkzettel anzulegen

English translation:Notepad
Explanation:
'Merkzettel' in this context would be used to refer to a list, presumably, of files that will be repeatedly accessed. The Merkzettel will then be used to aid quick access to commonly-opened files.

A list of things to do can be referred to as a Merkzettel for example.

A definition of 'Merkzettel' could be 'notepad', however individual pages also have the same name as far as I am aware.

Additional - you could use the 'Merkzettel' also as a list of shortcuts to areas of a file/database or to individual files.

Please note that some seem to be focusing on 'Merkzettel' as a singular and in that case the arguments are correct. The question author clearly states however that he is referring to a section with the heading 'Merkzettel', which implies the plural. You write notes on a notepad, therefore this translation still applies. Also for many software applications phrases like 'Sticky Notes' may be considered too informal.

An example: A heading in the preferences entitled 'Notepad' where the user can create multiple flags or notes to attach to files in order to be able to rapidly locate them in future.

desktop note (in the software context)

Explanation:
In German, KNotes is described as a Merkzettel-Verwaltung. The Merkzettel look like Post-It Notes (see first URL). The suggestion "to-do list" is relevant but the medium is a note, probably not a notepad.

agree  Anja Wulf: Yes. It's not a notepad but rather reminder notes for the desktop. My desktop calls them "sticky notes" and they are made to look like individual reminder notes. I'd go so far as to call them "desktop reminder notes" as a generic term.

disagree  GWilliams: Q refers to section called 'Merkzettel', not singular. Notepad is appropriate as a section heading for multiple reminder notes. Dogmatic? 'Heading' is in the question. Not being arrogant about it, just disagreeing. Also not much room to answer! :)

-> Well, OK, let's not get dogmatic. The context says "einen Merkzettel anlegen" and that's what I was referring to. I wasn't trying in any way to discredit your suggestion and set my confidence level to 2 deliberately.

neutral  hazmatgerman: Spricht die Frage nicht eher von einem Merkzettel an einem von mehreren Druckaufträgen, also eher einer "note" oder sogar "tab"?//tx for the explanation.

-> Tab? Doesn't really apply. It is a note of sorts, yes but at the same time that doesn't say enough I'm afraid. You could call it a list of 'flagged' or 'highlighted' files.

disagree  Anja Wulf: A notepad is a different application. A "Merkzettel" is a desktop reminder note, such as "Sticky Notes" or similar.

-> True in terms of the physical entity, but I am trying to provide something to use in his particular application's preferences window. Notepad would be an appropriate section for a user to note down commonly used files, or flag them in some way.
