Abfallend definiert jene Formatnorm, die bis an die Blattenden reicht, also das volle Format der Drucksache ausnutzt. Zwischen Druckbild und Kante ist kein Papier mehr sichtbar. Abfallend wird häufig auch als randabfallend oder angeschnitten bezeichnet.
Abfallende Formate erfordern ein Bedrucken des Papiers über den vorgesehenen Schnittrand hinaus. Für einen abfallenden Druck muss die Druckvorlage um 5mm größer sein als das fertige Produkt. In der Endverarbeitung wird es dann entsprechend zugeschnitten.

Wird ein Seite abfallend bestellt, bedeutet dies nichts anderes als, dass alle Bilder, welche bis zum beschnittenen Rand gedruckt werden sollen, im Layoutprogramm (X-Press, Indesign) mit 3-5 mm Überfüller angelegt werden müssen, d.h. dass das Bild 3-5 mm über den Seitenrand raussteht.
Der Grund für diesen Überfüller ist technisch bedingt, da der Drucker beim Zuschneiden der Seiten auf das Format mit der Schneidemaschine immer einen leichten Hohl- oder Kugelschnitt hat. (siehe Bild)
