I can't really say how this makes sense in the sentence (perhaps a little more context would be helpful). Either way, the verb "auffÀchern" usually means to "expand" or to "fan out" (see: http://dict.leo.org/?search=auff%E4chern&searchLoc=0&relink=...).

Thnaks for the input. This comes closest, though I think it still does not wholly cover what the authors meant, namely that the full colour surface is pixelised and only a 50% or 30% colour tone is printed. The confirmation from LEO is a help too.
