1–5% aller Kinder und Jugendlichen leiden unter einer manifesten sozialen Angststörung, *jedes 3.–5. Kind* fällt durch eine subklinische Form der Störung bzw. schüchternes Verhalten auf.

If the phrase means "every third to fifth child," it makes no sense, since no total number of children is given (there is no other relevant context--it's conclusions to be drawn about children with social phobias and anxieties). If it means "3 out of 5 children," then I find it highly implausible, that 3 out of 5 kids are so afflicted. I assume the problem is with my comprehension, rather than with the sentence!
