Gegen Ende des Jahres 2007 eskalierten die kirchlich bzw die katholisch forcierten Kontroversen zur hES-Forschung derart, dass vom Kulturkampf geradezu inflationär die Rede war. Der frühere DFG-Präsident Ernst-Ludwig Winnacker sprach in einem Artikel, der in der Zeitung „Die Zeit" erschien, gar vom „Weltanschauungskrieg".

I am unsure of the meaning of the clause after dass. It does not follow the usual word order rules and I was wondering if this is stylistic? Nevertheless I am unsure of its meaning and would appreciate some insight please :).

In late 2007 the controversies on embryonic stem cell research spurred by the church, more specifically the Catholic Church, escalated in such a way that the term "clash of cultures" was used exceedingly often.

I'd drop the direct translation of "inflationary" to better reflect the meaning of the sentence.
