I don't agree with you Rosa, I think it does add something to the meaning. It does reveal something about the writer's opinion:
"They may have criticised the research.., but they don't share the Catholic reasoning" is an objective description of their stance, while
"They may have criticised the research.., but at least they don't share the Catholic reasoning" betrays some relief on the writer's side that the Protestant critics didn't go so far as to adopt the Catholic rationale.
Which incidentally isn't a bad way to put it: "...didn't go so far as to..." |
