German term or phrase: zum äußeren Zeichen
Text (tourist brochure) about a church.
Last resting place of a parish priest "es wurde zu seinen Ehren und zum äußeren Zeichen die Urne mit seiner Asche in den neuen Volksaltar gesetzt" - "zum äußeren Zeichen" = "as a mark of recognition"?? Am I on the right lines here?

Explanation:
Do they mean that the urn with his ashes can be seen i.e. a visible sign/reminder of the priest?

Notes to answerer
Asker: I now think that it's more to do with putting forward a message. The priest was a honoured as a martyr who continued his pastoral duties during the NS regime despite having been forbidden to do so. He was killed in a concentration camp. So I think this putting the urn in a more prominent place is a symbolic gesture.

  -> I did think of that, but thought "visible" more appropriate i.e. stressing that this is something people can see (in addition to what has been written about him etc.)
disagree  British Diana: Surely the urn is not visible, it is inside the altar ! The people know it is there, but only the fact or the knowledge can be the reminder

  -> I was going by the fact that it is "zum *äußeren* Zeichen" i.e. not just a verbal or written tribute but a physical reminder.

agree  Helen Shiner: I'd be tempted to go for 'as a mark of honour' if Ehre didn't already appear earlier in the sentence, or even 'as a memorial', but that might be too formal. So this is a good solution.
