German to English translations [PRO]
Religion / Jewish terminology
German term or phrase: Gesetzesüberlieferung
"Die schriftliche Ordnung und Systematisierung der umfangreichen mündlichen Gesetzesüberlieferung ist schon früh ein Bestreben der rabbinischen Autoritäten."

I understand that it's about the oral tradition of passing down laws, but there must be a standard term for Gesetzesüberlieferung, oder?

Oral transmission of the law.
Notes to answerer
Asker: Yes: 'oral transmission of the law' would be OK, although I would be happier with a solution that stressed the aspect of tradition - i.e. the passing down of laws from one generation to the next.

Notes to answerer
Asker: I try not to be too influenced by what Google can do, but 'Oral transmission of the law' gets 53,000 Google hits, while 'Passing down of oral laws' gets one. I agree that 'passing down' is closer to the meaning we are after, but if there is a standard expression one has to use it, no?

neutral  Armorel Young: but that, and all your examples, are verb forms and a noun is needed here - it would have to be "the passing down of laws"

Mishnah

Explanation:
I think you are right to seek a technical term, given the context. I work primarily in Christian religion, not Jewish, but I believe Mishnah (or Mishna) would be the appropriate term.

Example sentence(s):
  • Eine Mischna (mündliche Gesetzesüberlieferung G - ttes an Moshe am Berg Sinai) aus dem Talmud Avot (Pirkei Avot), Kapitel 6, Mischna 9, zum Nachdenken

Notes to answerer
Asker: I'm not a Jewish scholar but I think 'Mishna(h)' would be inappropriate here despite it being essentially the same idea. The text is referring to very early attempts to organize oral laws into a written form - possibly before the term Mishnah had been adopted.

Peer comments on this answer (and responses from the answerer)
agree  Rebecca Garber: Technical term *specific* to the Jewish tradition. Does not apply beyond this religious boundary.
