I know the theological interpretation of this - but what is the ordinary, plain meaning of the word?

renounce

Explanation:
If used today we would probably translate it as renounce.

The english King James Version uses 'made himself of no reputation' and the New International Version gives 'made himself nothing'.

The Latin Vulgata has 'exinanivit' wich my shaky school Latin would translate as 'emptied himself'.

If it's plain language you're after I would say:
"He no longer cared for what he had accomplished in life so far and resigned himself to the simple life of a farm hand instead."
or "He was no longer interested in what he had achieved in life so far..., "His mind was no longer with his past accomplishments.. etc.
