@ Asker:
The dissertation is a (main) part of the examination and carries something like 70% of the final mark and the remainder is made up with some other modules which count towards the examination. I acted a few years back as a supervisor and first marker for one of the London universities, but would have to look now in my handbook to be more precise.
But here is another example:

yes david you are right, it could be called a referre.
But a supervisor /professor , a person who is referred to for information about character etc is listed as a reference contact. I do not want to dispute your use of "referee" but in my over 20 years of working here in canada, the term referee is only used for a person who settles a dispute and has do render a decision. the term referee used in the context here, would cause confusion by the reader.
Geisteswissenschaften are the humanities. As I understand the situation, a Diplomarbeit is a piece of writing done for a Diplom, which comes closest to a degree. This is followed by a Magisterarbeit for a Magister, i.e. M.A. or M.Sc. and a Doktorarbeit is a PhD. thesis.
A "referee" is also a person who provides a reference (i.e. for a job application) who may well -- under certain circumstances -- be an academic such as your (former) supervisor/professor.
To answer your question about Magisterarbeit: Magisterarbeit is a similar degree as Diplomarbeit, but in different faculties: Sciences usually have "Diplom" and Geisteswissenschaften (I do not know the English term) like history have "Magister".
I've never heard of the term referee being used in university, college.
referee is usally, at least were I live, used when there is a dispute of some sort or in sport.
from a different university, if there is no other professor for the same subject, writes the second one, and the mean grade results in the final grade, together with the exam. Diplomarbeit is not undergraduate, this used to be the final university exam
For a Diplomarbeit, it is the same procedure in Germany as for a Doktorarbeit, there is a first and a second referee. The supervisor (or his/her professor) writes the first review, and another professor, usually from the same university, but sometimes
I'm a little confused. I don't think there is either a "person who writes the second review about" nor a "first referee" or "second referee" for an undergraduate dissertation, is there? Not in British academia as I experienced it, in any case. So would this be the supervisor and the other (external) examiner? That sounds more applicable to a PhD than an undergraduate dissertation.
Hello David, I do not know the translation, but the "Erstkorrektor" is the same as the "Erstgutachter" of a thesis, he usually also is the supervisor. The second "Korrektor" is the person who writes the second review about the thesis. I hope that helps!
As Johanna pointed out, the "Erstkorrektor" is usually the supervisor/thesis advisor.
And, mind, a diploma thesis is no less than a doctoral thesis in many fields, that's not like graduate vs undergraduate.

You are right - German academic grades are very confusing :-))
They are subject to federal states law and thus can be different from one state to another, and they tend to be re-defined over time. See e.g. summary at Wikipedia: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akademischer_Grad
(My remark above was in part referring to the "old" GDR medical diploma thesis which was often more demanding and comprehensive than a West German medical doctoral thesis.)

Asker: How intriguing. If a diploma thesis is no less than a doctoral thesis, what then is a Magisterarbeit, which is surely between a Diplomarbeit and a Doktorarbeit?
Asker: This is not so much about academic grades as about academic positions and titles.

Asker: This is for a dissertation, not an exam.
Asker: Great, thanks! For my final year dissertation we had examiners, but it seems as if it varies from one university to another, or else may have changed in the intervening decade or so.
