Noch einmal etwas aus den FAQ einer Gebrauchtsegelbörse.

Wie übersetzt man am besten dieses Begriffspaar (möglichst knapp, d. h. am besten ohne Relativsatzkonstruktionen)?

In-stock sails sounds better than stock sails. Sails on order might work for the other term.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Kim, first of all: thanks a lot! Then: I'm trying to avoid "stock sails" because I think it can also mean sth like "standard sails", i.e. it's somewhat ambiguous. A sail that is to be built for a customer could also be non custom-made. How does "in-stock sails" and "sails to be built/made" sound to a native English ear?

Asker: I finally went with "in-stock" and "custom-built sails". Thanks again!

agree  Kcda: Maybe you are right to drop "neu zu bauende" I am not sure. Why is the idea of anew/newly/to be built, not incorporated into the otherwise correct suggestion? Afterall the sentence is saying the "neu zu bauende"./Ok. good point. His fault!

-> Yes, but among other considerations the asker said: Wie übersetzt man am besten dieses Begriffspaar (möglichst knapp)/No, Kcda, I'm not saying it's his fault. I think my translation is fine. Sails that are to be built are usually custom-built.

agree  Rebecca Garber: This works well, and indicates that the supplier can both manufacture custom sails, and has standard sails on hand. Stock does mean both, but no one keeps non-standard sails on hand.
