German term or phrase: bei Bedarf stell gestoppt
Das Polopferd muss ja nicht wie bei der klassischen Reiterei „am Zügel gehen“, sondern nur bei Bedarf stell gestoppt werden können – ähnlich wie bei der Westernreiterei.

Any polo aficionados out there? I am particularly interested in "stell gestoppt", and whether there is a common polo term used for this phrase.

All three replies had the same common idea running through, that the horse needs to be stopped quickly - so this seals any doubts for me. Thanks for all your help.

stop suddenly

Explanation:
The sentence says the horse should be able to be stopped suddenly, but it would probably suffice to say that the horse must be able to stop suddenly. Either is okay, I think.

Example sentence(s):
  • Ponies thoroughly schooled to accelerate, stop suddenly and turn quickly.
  • The good polo pony must be able to stop and turn ‘on a sixpence’' and most players consider their success is greatly due to the ability of their ponies.
