Ramming core sounding (UK) Explanation: The tools used for making a sounding or taking a soil test in the USA are called 'soil sample rings.' The part that does the driving is called the hammering head ('Ramm-'in German). If you are referring to the tool used to take this sounding for a US reader 'hammering head soil sample ring' might! work. It depends on whether you are talking about the tool,i.e. soil sample 'ring' or the process of measuring the depth of the soil stratum being tested.
