Leading phase dimmer Explanation: From web page below: "AND 1,3 Verteilerschrankdimmer - Der digitale Hutschienen-Dimmer AND 1,3 µC arbeitet nach dem Phasenanschnittprinzip. Bei jeder Halbwelle der sinusförmigen Eingangsspannung wird je nach Dimmstellung ein entsprechendes Stück weggeschnitten." From second web page below: "Alle Paulmann-Trafos sind dimmbar. Zu beachten ist lediglich, daß für elektronische Trafos ein PhasenABschnittdimmer, für konventionelle Trafos ein PhasenANschnittdimmer benötigt wird." So it seems to be that these phase dimmers differ in WHICH PART of the phase they cut - either the leading phase (AN) or the trailing phase (AB). see detail Explanation: this is variously called an 'inverse phase control mode' dimmer or a 'reverse phase control mode' dimmer (see the refs). Briefly, a standard dimmer starts conducting partway through the phase (half cycle) and automatically stops conducting when the current drops to zero. A reverse phase control dimmer starts conducting at the zero crossing and stops conducting somewhere before the next zero crossing. The overal effect is the same -- the amount of energy reaching the lamp can be varied -- but the reverse phase control does not produce high inrush currents can (will!) destroy a conventional dimmer if it is used with an 'electronic' transformer. extre ref: http://www.rosco-et.com/ips_testing.htm Reference: http://gehtnix.fernuni-hagen.de:8000/se2-de/ke2/node26.html#... leading-edge phase dimmer / trailing-edge phase dimmer Explanation: Note from person asking: Thanks for the contributions and especially the reference texts - very helpful! In the meantime the client has provided a previous text where the two terms mentioned above are the preferred terms used - corroborating what you both said. Thanks |
