hot shoe (but please be careful with the use of the term)
"Hot shoe: A clip on the top of the camera that attaches a flash unit and provides an electrical link to synchronize the flash with the camera shutter."
Be careful! Do not use the word "socket", there is no "socket" in a "Blitzschuh".
Do not use the phrase "hot shoe with center contact" because all "hot shoes" have a center contact or else they would not be "hot". If the "shoe" is only there to hold the flash unit but has no electronic synchronization link to the camera electronics, it is then just called a "shoe".
The "shoe" is the clip that the "foot" of the flash unit slides into.
If the shoe is not "hot", there will be a cable plug socket somewhere else on the camera to accept the plug on a cable from the flash unit.
