German term or phrase: geschotteter
geschotteter Server Bereich - in fact, the whole phrase is odd, but 'geschotteter' really flummoxes me.

closed server area

Explanation:
it could be read "abgeschottener" Bereich, which then could be closed such as for members only.

Just a wild guess. But many hits on google when inputting *abgeschotteter server*. Happy new year.

probably should be "abgeschotteter" = hermetically sealed

Explanation:
Hi Gordon,

This is probably a mistake and should be "abgeschotteter Serverbereich". This means an isolated area or dedictated area or closed up area. Other possibilites would be sealed of, insulated and maybe even closed.

In connection with secure servers "hermetically sealed" is common usage (see link).

Just a short explanation to the term \"Schotter\". Schotter means gravel. \"Geschotteter Weg means that the road has a ravel or macadam surface. Though Schotter means crushed stones, there is no way that \"geschottetet\" in this context means partitioned or devided. I\'d rather believe that the author didn\'t know much German as Server Bereich should have also been one word, either with or without hyphen.

Abschottern is derived from the noun \"das Schott\", which is a bulkhead in a ship. Abschottern is always used in the sense of isolating, e.g. \"Nach der Befreiung wurden die Geiseln in einem abgeschotteten Teil des Hauses untergebracht.\" means nobody could get to the hostages. In case of IT abgeschottet means that a device is safe in case of a desaster, e.g. a fire or an earthquake. In your context this this very likely pertains to the computer room or the computer housing. Example:

The Servers: *Industry Class Machines (from 800mhz and 512mb RAM, dual-RAID real-time backup for HDD failure backup, first-class MSI mainboards, 150gb HDD space).

*stable UNIX operating system (we run FreeBSD 4.3 as hosting environment on all our UNIX hosting machines).

*All recent security updates (don\'t suffer from hacker attacks - 100% security).

*World-Class Data Center (60kW military DIESEL backup generator, hermetically sealed air-conditioned server-rooms, motion detectors, security steel at entrance)

Some IP networks are “closed.” Closed IP networks do not have access to the World Wide Web. Instead, closed networks use TCP/IP to share information across a “hermetically sealed” LAN.

In both cases the translation of \"abgeschottet\" would be possible, though in the second case it just means that the LAN has not Internet connection. If you google you\'ll find a lot more examples.

Explanation:
if you type partitioned server into Google you get quite a few examples of usage...although it doesn't mean a lot to me!

-> Yes, more elegant, but geschottet isn't very elegant either.
