German term or phrase: Flankenlinienrücknahme
I found "Flankenlinie" as "tooth curve" or "tooth trace". "Rcknahme" as "relief" in gears. Tooth curve relief would sound obvious, but I'm not expert in gearwheels. To make matters more confusing I found "Flankenlinienabweichung" as "alignment deviation". Can any provide insight into the correct term?

gear tooth flank contour

1. "Flankenlinie" - flank contour
2. I am not sure about "Rücknahme" to be translated as "relief". Could "retraction" or even "alignement" be of any use?
Here are some useful paragraphs form my Google search:

Flanke - the flank of a tooth, not the profile (visit the site below for the graphical presentation).

"Gear misalignment data along with previously defined data from "Gear" is used in "Topgear" to define the gear flank topology: Crowning, Tip Relief and Lead. A surface contour map is generated showing the contact clearance between mating gear flanks. Based on zero torque to maximum torque conditions, proper contact can be maintained within the tooth profile by optimising the three parameters."

"MAAG Zahnräder AG Zurich had manufactured high quality gear measuring machines and - equipments as for example involute profile measuring system ES-430 with processing control as well as the gear measuring machines of the SP- and PH- lines for measuring and recording profil, lead and surface of flanks of helical and spur gears. Furthermore, gear pitch tester with process computer, diagram recorder and -printer ES-401, the double flank composite error tester of DAS-lines and the pitch measuring devices TML, TMC and TMI for the measuring of internal and external toothings"

Some definitions:

Pitch surface : The surface of the imaginary rolling cylinder (cone, etc.) that the toothed gear may be considered to replace.

Pitch circle: A right section of the pitch surface.

Addendum circle: A circle bounding the ends of the teeth, in a right section of the gear.

Root (or dedendum) circle: The circle bounding the spaces between the teeth, in a right section of the gear.

Addendum: The radial distance between the pitch circle and the addendum circle.

Dedendum: The radial distance between the pitch circle and the root circle.

Clearance: The difference between the dedendum of one gear and the addendum of the mating gear.

Face of a tooth: That part of the tooth surface lying outside the pitch surface.

Flank of a tooth: The part of the tooth surface lying inside the pitch surface.

Circular thickness (also called the tooth thickness) : The thickness of the tooth measured on the pitch circle. It is the length of an arc and not the length of a straight line.

Tooth space: The distance between adjacent teeth measured on the pitch circle.

Backlash: The difference between the circle thickness of one gear and the tooth space of the mating gear.

Circular pitch p: The width of a tooth and a space, measured on the pitch circle.

Diametral pitch P: The number of teeth of a gear per inch of its pitch diameter. A toothed gear must have an integral number of teeth.
