German term or phrase: St 37-2
This is a steel grade. Does anyone know how to find out what the equivalent grade designation is for the U.S.?

English translation:SAE/AISI 1008
Explanation:
St37-2 is a very soft mild steel. The American SAE/AISI 1008 is the nearest.

(I assume you want the US equivalent as you are translating for an American audience. Most people in the steel related industries in the UK will know this German spec, which is now superseded on the Continent and in the UK by the European spec S235.)

mild steel of type SAE AISI 1008/ASTM A36

Explanation:
This is after reflection on my earlier suggestion if 1008. The further complication is that many steel specs refer to a particular product. On the other hand St37-2 is very general. The spec in my original answer is mainly used in the form of bars and sheets. If the job you are doing is about the construction industry, then the relevant spec is ASTM A36. If the industry is not specified, then if you use the above phrase you are covering all bases.
