swirl duct Explanation: Introducing the new common rail system, BMW is also launching other new developments such as micro-blind hole injection jets with optimised nozzles for enhanced combustion and, as a result, even cleaner emissions. On the six-cylinder power unit the modified geometry of the two intake ducts - the swirl duct and the tangential duct - provides a greater swirl effect at low engine speeds and loads and higher air throughput in the tangential duct at higher engine speeds. The tangential duct is disconnected under low load and at low engine speeds by way of a throttle butterfly in the intake manifold. Reducing the effective intake cross-section accordingly, this slows down air velocity in the swirl duct and helps to further reduce emissions. Together with the new combustion chamber geometry with a very wide and flat piston crown as well as the lower compression ratio, this provides an even better air/fuel mixture and a smoother combustion process.
