Hi Alan,

Although there is a reference in KudoZ quoting curve data - I have the feeling STRAK comes from \'Stromlinienform\' - they are designing \'streamlined bodies\'. Can\'t think what the rest stands for.

Explanation:
I'm not able to figure out what Strak actually stands for (must be some sort of abbrev.). No translation but I hope this can be of any help.

Alan, you should know better.

I had this questions a while back. This search came up with

curve data

body design

In my application, I used curve data.

shape lines

Explanation:
The Brockhaus defines 'Strak' (or 'Straak'} as: '[nd. von Streichen] ... der Verlauf der Kurven des Linienrisses, wie Decksprung, Wasserlinien, Schnitte, Spanten und Senten, die harmonisch laufen müssen.'

It's thus orignally a boatbuilder's term and Plattdeutsch. It doesn't seem be used any more in boatbuilding, but it is common in aircraft design. Here it is often used to refer not to just a single line, but also a collection of lines that defines the (external) form of a closed object (such as an airfoil or aircraft fuselage).

One suggestion of a synonym that I have seen is 'Linineführung'.

'shape line(s)' is a guess (I'm not that familiar with any CAD packages); it gets a few relevant hits on Google. If I had to invent a translation I would use 'formlines', but that gets even fewer hits (sigh...).

In any
