load factor method Explanation: LOAD FACTOR METHOD The load factor method involves increasing the nominal loads by a factor of safety. The structure is then designed to just ‘fail’ when the factored load is applied. This was the method commonly used for footing and pile design in Australia, UK and USA. The load factor method works well in situations where the safety is sensitive to the load. For example when wind uplift is nearly balanced by weight. For slopes in cohesionless material a factor applied to the weight of the materials will have no effect on the overall safety (Simpson et al 1981).
