Parrot gives an English equivalent, but I have never heard of it before, so I can assume most of my audience has also never heard of it, so I really couldn't use it, even if it is technically accurate.

In a Google search for Versalien, I came up with this statement: "Waehrend in der Umgangsprache die Begriffe Groß- und Kleinbuchstaben benutzt werden, lauten die Fachbegriffe Versalien und Gemeine." So the technical term for lower case letters is "Gemeine."
