shield Explanation: if it's underground as in Continental Shield , etc. meaning ... quote Oxford dictionary... 'Geology - a large rigid area of the earth's crust,typically of Precambrian rock, which has been unaffected by later orogenic episodes. e.g. the Canadian Shield. Flöz, according to Oxford Duden = (Bergbau) seam. The photograph could have been taken below the shield, within a 80 cm seam/layer/vein of the mineral that is being mined here. shield Explanation: A few weeks ago I did some translation work for a mining company and came across some useful glossaries: one of them was very helpful: www.kristalle.ch/minweb/geotransge.asp Here is a definition of Schild in German: Schildausbau hydraulisch verstellbares Stütz- und Schutzgerät auf Gleitkufen, dessen oberer Teil schildartig geschlossen ist und das Hangende stützt. So kann der Arbeitsraum des Bergmanns in der Gewinnung (Streb) sowohl nach oben, als auch nach hinten völlig gegen Stein- und Kohlenfall abgeschirmt werden. Zum Bewegen der Schilde wird der Strebförderer als Widerlager genutzt. Ein Schild ist 1,5 Meter breit und kann in der Höhe von eins - vier Metern, je nach Schildtyp, verstellt werden.
