hand specimen / operational specimen Explanation: That is the translation that Ernst, "Wörterbuch der industriellen Technik", offers. However, this term is used almost exclusively for geology related research, which is why I like "operating specimen" or "operational specimen" better. There are more context-oriented sites to be found for this phrase on Google. The difference between a "functional specimen" and this term are, that the first illustrates the functions, and the second actually works, similarly to the final product.
